If I can't find refuge in tv or radio (bless the BBC overnight service) I will imagine completely impossible, perfect scenarios, like living in a Welsh cottage with sheep and a fantastic overcoat. Or I mentally redecorate my parents' house one detail at a time (this includes major renovations, like opening the second closed fireplace and putting in moldings around the ceilings.
But mostly, I find comfort in physicality, if I can, and leave my mind well enough alone. Heh. x.g.
For me, it's things like long drives, or baking fancy desserts, or drawing or painting or knitting or some project that requires both my mind and body. When I do these things, I don't think about much aside from the thing that I am doing, and it's easy for my mind to stay quiet and peaceful because it's busy. If I engage my mind in a very particular way, the more unruly bits of it leave me alone, if that makes sense.
